5 Top Tips To Getting The Perfect Lawn in 2020

December 09, 2019 | by Joe

We have all been there, looking over the fence at a neighbour’s lawn wishing that yours was just like theirs or maybe we have been invited round to a friend’s garden party and you are as green with envy as the lawn you are standing on.

It is important to understand that in order to get the perfect lawn, you need a plan. You also need to be committed to this plan. Here at Mow and Grow, we like to be able to assist our customers with advice and guidance in getting the perfect lawn. The services we offer will also help you with maintenance, especially if you do not have the time to manage this yourselves.

Here are 5 top tips to get your started:

1 Mowing

One of the biggest mistakes people make when it comes to mowing their lawn is cutting it too short. Many often think that cutting it shorter saves you time in between cuts, (which is 100% correct), however the damage it can do will not help you achieve that perfect lawn. Afterall, that is why we are providing these top tips.

It is recommended not to cut below a third of the lawn’s length each time. You may not know this but the additional length you leave allows the blades of grass to absorb the sunlight and retain moisture. If you are not able to cut the lawn very frequently, raise the height of cut so as to keep as close to the 1/3 rule when cutting the lawn.

Top Tip: Ask yourself a question; When was the last time you sharpened or replaced the blade on your lawn mower? By doing so, this will help you get the perfect and smooth cut. Blunt blades can easily tear through the blades of grass.

2 Food

We need it to survive, so does your lawn! Regular lawn treatments will help you maintain a perfect lawn but what does it do? Very simply; it provides the nutrients that helps your grass grow, be healthier and stronger. Using specific seasonal fertilisers will also be advantageous too. (Get in touch for more information on this)

Top Tip: It is recommended that you look at ‘feeding’ your lawn once every three months all year round.

3 Watering

Regular watering will help you achieve that ‘perfect lawn’ as most lawns will need a minimum of 25-40mm of water each week. This helps moisten the soil to provide the perfect platform for your grass to grow. Of course, you need to keep an eye on the weather forecast because the last thing you need is to find yourself flooding your garden. This could cause more issues and prevent you from achieving the results you are looking for.

Top Tip: Set a schedule to position your sprinklers for a set amount of time (maybe set an alarm) so that you can get an equal distribution of water on your lawn.

4 Oxygen

Like most living things, grass needs air as well as food and water to survive. Heavy traffic, poor soil conditions and long wet period cause the air pockets in the soil to be squeezed out or filled with water. Spiking the lawn regularly with a shallow spiked roller or with a garden fork at least once a year will help open up soil to allow air and other nutrients down to the roots. Scarification rakes out unwanted organic matter which also allows room for the lawn to breath.

Top Tip: Aerate your lawn at least once a year between Autumn and early spring and scarify when needed. You may want to hire a professional for this.

Mow and Grow uses professional machinery which makes light work of this and will save you a lot of time, especially if you have a large lawn.

5 Be Consistent

Getting the perfect lawn is an all year-round process and that is why we recommend you be consistent and committed to looking after your lawn on a regular basis. If you do so, you are very likely to see the benefits.

Top Tip: If you do not have the time, consult a specialist to advise you. This is where Mow and Grow Lawn Care Services come in because we would be more than happy to come and discuss the options available to you without charge.
